Saturday - Sunny, high in low 70s. Maryland and Virginia: Today - Sunny and pleasant, high in 60s to near 70 low from low 30s in the mountains to mid 40s in the east. Saturday - Sunny, high near 70.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair, visibility more than five miles. Winds will be easterly at 10 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be one foot.

Extended Area Outlook for Sunday through Tuesday: Fair weather should prevail through the period. The highs will average in the 60s with lows in the 40s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 62 and a low of 42.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered showers will be spread from the western portions of Texas north through western Kansas and west across Colorado. New Mexico and southern Wyoming and also in Montana. Scattered rainshowers will also fall over southern Florida. The showers will turn to snow over the Montana and Colorado mountains. Except for the central inter-mountain region. California and Arizona which shall have fair or sunny skies. The rest of the nation west of the Mississippi River will have partly cloudy skies. The remainder of the nation will have sunny skies. Though it will still be mild, temperatures will not be as high over Montana and the northern great plains. Elsewhere little change in temperature will occur. Cool conditions will prevail from the southern Rockies west through the inland portions of California and the remainder of the country will have mild temperatures.

The Nation Yesterday: Snow showers still held on in the mountains of portions of southeastern Nevada. A travelers advisory was continued for Lincoln County. The snow level was around 6 thousand feet. Most of the nation's precipitation was in the form of scattered showers and a few thundershowers that reached from western Utah into northwest and central Arizona. Prescott and Grand Canyon, Az. and Cedar City, Ut. reported thundershowers, while showers dampened the remaining areas. Light rain associated with a cold front over the northwestern Washington coast was the only other rain reported. The precipitation in the Southwest was being triggered by a weather disturbance in the upper atmosphere, while the rain in Washington was caused by a cold front. High pressure systems dominating the rest of the nation kept it bone dry. Mild or warm temperatures covered all portions of the nation except over the southern intermountain region. Temperatures continued to rise over the Great Plains, 70s reached into the North Dakota. New England and Montana had 60s and 80s moved into Arkansas. At the same time, quite in contrast, Utah and Nevada were reporting 40 degree readings. The warmest area in the nation was south Texas where middle 80s were recorded.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 20 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity.The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain at 2.8 feet today.
