Extended Area Outlook for Monday through Wednesday: It will be partly cloudy with little or no precipitation through the period. The highs will be in the 60s and lows in the 40s except for some 30s in the mountains. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high at 61 and a low of 42.

The Nation Yesterday: Warm southerly winds pushed temperatures into the upper 70s and low 80s in Kansas and Missouri. The temperature at Kansas City, Mo., reached 81 to tie the record for that date set in 1924. The warm air reached into the upper Mississippi Valley and the northern Great Lakes region, 70s appeared in Minnesota and northern lower Michigan. With temperatures still rising, some cities had already surpassed the previous marks set on this date. Des Moines had reached 75, the old record was 73, that broke the record of 72 set in 1975.The temperature there was expected to rise a few more degrees. Elsewhere in the nation, except for most of the Rockies and the states westward to the Pacific coast where seasonably cool. Cool temperatures were expected to persist. The remainder of the nation was expecting mild weather. Sixties and 50s were over New England and the northern Great Plains. The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be ending from the West in New Mexico and will be spread over west and south Texas. Rain or scattered showers will dampen parts of Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho and Montana. Elsewhere, most skies will be fair or sunny. Seasonably cool termperatures will continue over the coastal sections of the Pacific northwest, northern California, the southern Rockies and west Texas and it will be a little cooler elsewhere in Texas. Except for warm weather over the coastal sections of south and central California, the remainder of the nation will have mild weather.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 27 for the pollutant, photochemical and oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain at 2.9 feet today.
