The Nation Yesterday: Snow continued over the northern Rockies. Light snow was accumulating in eastern Idaho, Montana, northern Utah, Wyoming, western Nebraska, the Dakotas, and northern Minnesota. To make conditions worse northern winds of 15 to 20 mph were pushing bitter cold temperatures through this area. Temperatures in the teens gripped the northern Rockies with a few places still near zero. Readings below freezing covered the entire northwestern quarter of the nation from Lake Superior, through Minnesota, and as far south as Nebraska, northwestern Kansas, and Colorado. Wyoming and Montana were hardest hit by the snow storm. Lander Wyo. had 10 inches of new snow this morning for a total of 1 foot on the ground. Ice was causing problems in Colorado and northwestern Kansas. The snow had not reached this area yet but freezing temperatures were turning drizzle to dangerous freezing drizzle, icing roads and passes. The southern states and the eastern seaboard were humid but mostly sunny with temperatures in the 70s. Only New England was having cool weather. The desert Southwest and southern California were enjoying sunny and mild weather. The national weather forecast for today - bitter cold will cover the northern Rockies. Snow will spread from the Rocky Mountains across the northern Great Plains into the upper Great Lakes region. Cold rain will be scattered over the remainder of the Plains and the remainder of the Great Lakes region. Northern Maine will have rain. The West Coast, the southern states, and most of the Atlantic seaboard will remain dry and sunny with mild temperatures. Freezing temperatures will cover all of the Rockies, most of the Great Plains, and the upper Mississippi Valley. It will be rather cool in the Pacific Northwest.
