Extended Area Forecast for Wednesday through Friday - Chance of rain Wednesday, fair with a cooling trend Thursday and Friday. Highs will average in the 50s, lows in the 40s, in the 30s by the end of the period. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 57 and a low of 38.

West Virginia: Today - Cloudy in the north, partial clearing in the south, highs from the 50s to low 30s, lows in the 40s. Tuesday - Partly cloudy, high in the 60s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Cloudy with a chance of showers over the northern bay. Visability will be 1 to 3 miles in showers and haze, otherwise 5 miles or better. Winds will be from the east at 8 to 15 knots shifting to the southeast later in the day. Waves will average 2 to 3 feet.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Snowfall will continue across the Rockies and spread northeastward in to the Dakotas. Cold rain will reach the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley. Along the Pacific Coast the sun will finally break out. The Antartic Seaboard and most of the southern states will also have some sunshine. The northern half of the Rockies and the Dakotas will not warm above freezing. In contrast, the Gulf Coast states will have temperatures in the 80s. The southern third of the nation will have mild conditions with New England and the Pacific Northwest rather cold.

The Council of Government's Air Qualify Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 9 a.m. period was 16 for the polutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain in the good range.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain between 28 and 29 feet today.
