Maryland and Virginia: Today - Rain, highs mainly in the 40s, lows in the 30s. Tuesday - Variable cloudiness with a chance showers, highs from the mid 40s to the mid 50s, from the 40s in the west to the 50s in the east.

West Virginia: Today - Rain, possibly heavy at times, highs from the 40s to low 50s, lows in the 30s. Tuesday - Occasional snow flurries, breezy and cooler, high in the 30s.

Extended Area Forecast for Wednesday through Firday - increasing cloudiness through the period with a chance of rain during the last half. Highs will average lows from the upper 20s to the 30s. Normal Washington temperature are a high of 50 and a low of 34.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Snow, changing to rain by morning. Visibility will be less than 1 mile in precipitation. Waves will average 1 to 2 feet. Winds will be southerly increasing to 10 to 20 knots by morning.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Snow is forecast throughout the upper half of Mississippi Valley, all of the Great Lakes region and New England except for Maine. Snow showers and flurries will linger over the northern Rockies and North Dakota. Thundershowers are likely in the Central Gulf states, with rain covering the Ohio Valley, the mild Atlantic states, Tennessee and the Carolinas. Cloudy skies will remain over parts of the central plains, but some clearing will take place in the southern Plains. The southwestern U.S. and the extreme South Atlantic Coast will also have fair skies. Colder temperatures are in store for most of the plains and the Missippi Valley. It will be warmer along most of the middle and south Atlantic Coast and in Arizons.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed 13 for the pollutant, photochemical the high reading in the Washington area during the 9 a.m. period was oxidants. Index values between 0 and 25 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain in the good range.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain rear 3.0 feet today.
