Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday - Variable cloudiness. Highs will range from the mid 40s to the mid 50s, lows will be in the 30s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 50 and a low of 33.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Chance of morning showers followed by gradual clearing. Visibility will reach 5 miles or more during the day. Winds will shift to the west or northwest increasing to 15 to 25 knots. Waves will average 2 to 4 feet.

The national weather forecast for today - Snow will spread from North Dakota across the Great Lakes region into New England. Rain will continue from the Virginias to central Florida. Rain will move across the Pacific Northwest turning to snow in the higher elevations. The most pleasant weather will be over southern Florida with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. The southern half of the nation will be mostly sunny with mild temperatures.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 15 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 3.0 feet today.
