Metro will change about 45 bus routes beginning Sunday to coordinate bus service in Northeast Washington and northern Prince George's County with the subway Orange Line, which opened last week.

Although the official changeover date is Sunday, the first day of real impact for most aarea residents will be Monday, the first full weekday for the new bus and subway schedule.

Most of the bus schedule changes are designed to reduce or eliminate duplicate bus and subway service, and thus induce the cost of operating the Metro system.

Newcomers to commuting trips that require both bus and subway will find Metro transfer policies somewhat confusing. In brief, it is not possible to transfer from bus to subway: One must pay full fare the bus trip, then full fare for the subway trip.

However, it is possible to transfer from subway to bus. Riders must obtain transfers from machines inside the entrance gates at the station where they board a train. Bus drivers are not supposed to accept transfers marked with the station where riders exit.

The transfer is worth the base fare only. Zone charges, if any, have to be paid on the bus, in exact change.

One way to avoid the transfer system is the Maryland-D.C. Metro Flash Pass, which costs $16 and is good for unlimited bus rides in Maryland and the District for a two-week period. Each pass, which is shaped like a Metro farecare, contains $6.25 in subway rides.

Metro also offers a $10 flash pass that is particularly useful for District residents. It permits unlimited bus trips during a two-week period and contains $5 worth of subway rides.

Virginia's flash pass costs $16 and contains $5 worth of subway rides. However, the pass is good for only two zones. Rides covering more than two zones cost extra, depending on destination.

Flash passes are sold at most Metro ticket and token outlets.

The bus schedule changes include improve service for the residents of Anacostia and Congress Heights in the District.

In Prince George's County, service will be added or revised for Peppermill Village, Springhill Lake, Greenbelt Center, Kettering, Belair Center, Bowie State College and Prince George's Community College.

Many bus routes in D.C. and Prince George's County have been changed to bring the buses through the five new Metro stations on the Orange Line. The new stations are Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton.

Bus routes that will be changed are listed below. If there is no listing, the route will remain the same. Timetables for each route are supposed to be available from bus drivers on the routes and at Metro subway station kiosks.

Prince George's County Routes

Route A11: Eliminated. Replaced by new Route A12.

Route A12: Revised to operate to Deanwood Metro station instead of Potomac Avenue Metro station via Capital Plaza, Landover Road, Pennsy Drive, Landover Metro station, Pennysy Drive, Old Landover Road, old A12 routing to Greenleaf Road and Palmer Highway to Eastern Avenue, Minnesota Avenue and Deanwood Metro station. Service between Eastern Avenue and Potomac Avenue Metro station currently provided by Route A12 will be provided by new Route J16.

Route A17: Eliminated. Alternate service to Landover or Deanwood Metro stations provided by new Route A12.

Route B12: Eliminated. Service between Penn Mar and Potomac Avenue station via Pennsylvania Avenue and Fairfax Village will be provided by Routes V11 and V12.

Route B19: Eliminated. Service to Suitland Federal Center will be provided by Routes H17 or K17 from Potomac Avenue Metro station.

Route F2: Extended to Cheverly Metro station via Rhode Island Avenue, 38th Avenue, Bladensburg Road, Annapolis Road, Landover Road, Hospital Road, Cheverly Avenue, Columbia Park Road, Cheverly station, Columbia Park Road, Arbor Street, Tuxedo Road, 57th Avenue, Beecher Street, 57th Place, Tuxedo Road, Arbor Street, Columbia Park Road and Cheverly station.

Route F4: Extended to New Carrollton station via Annapolis Road and Harkins Road.

Route F12: New route provides shuttle service between Landover and New Carrollton stations via Ardmore-Ardwick Industrial Park, utilizing Garden City Drive, Ardmore-Ardwick Road, Jefferson Street, Polk Street and Pennsy Drive.

Route F14: Rerouted to operate between Deanwood and New Carrollton Metro stations via Minnesota Avenue, Addision Road, Sheriff Road, current F14 routing, Palmer Highway, Whitfield Chapel Road, Annapolis Road and Harkins Road. Service to Glenn Dale Hospital will be provided by Route T12.

Route J16: New route designation for the inner portion of old Route A12, with service provided between 63rd Street and Eastern Avenue and Potomac Avenue Metro Station via Palmer Highway, Addison Road, Central Avenue, Larchmont Avenue, Marlboro Pike, Bowen Road, Alabama Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Route P12: Extended to Deanwood Metro station, with new service to parts of Peppermill Village via Central Avenue, Pepper Mill Drive, Dry Log Street, Jade Leaf Avenue, Seat Pleasant Drive, Addison Road and Minnesota Avenue.

Route R11: New express service between Springhill Lake and the New Carrollton Metro station via Garden City Drive, Ardmore-Ardwick Road, U.S. Rte. 50, Capital Beltway, Kenilworth Avenue, Edmonston Road, Springhill Drive, Springhill Lane, Breezewood Drive, Cherrywood Lane, Greenbelt Road, Cunningham Drive and Beltway Plaza.

Route R12: All trips will terminate at Deanwood Metro station instead of Stadium-Armory Metro station, with regular route operated from the Goddard Space Flight Center to Kenilworth Avenue and Eastern Avenue, and then via Eastern Avenue and Minnesota Avenue to the Deanwood station.

Route R15: New express service between the Greenbelt Center and the New Carrollton Metro station via Garden Way, Ridge Road, Laurel Hill Road, Hillside Road, Crescent Road, Kenilworth Avenue, Capital Beltway, U.S. Rte. 50 and Garden City Drive.

Route S12: Service between Southview and Marlow Heights will be eliminated.Alternate service is available via Route P12.

Route T10: New service from Stadium-Armory Metro station to the east side of Kettering via Watkins Park Drive, Cambleton Drive, Essenton Drive, Keverton Drive, Watkins Park Drive, Central Avenue and regular route.

Route T11: New service to Pointer Ridge community via regular route to Kenhill Drive and Rte. 197, then via Rte. 197, Northview Drive, Nottinghill Drive, Mount Oak Road, Peach Walker Drive, Mitchellville Road, Pittsfield Lane and regular route.

Route T12: Trips will terminate at the New Carrollton Metro station instead of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station. Service will be provided via Belair Center, Sage Lane, Stonybrook Drive, Annapolis Road, Greenbelt Road, Glenn Dale Hospital, Greenbelt Road, Annapolis Road and Harkins Road to the New Carrollton Metro station.

Route T14: Trips will terminate at the New Carrollton Metro station instead of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station. Service will be provided via Belair Center, Sage Lane, Stonybrook Drive, Millstream Drive, Rte. 197. Normal School Road, Race Track Road, Jericho Park Road, Bowie State College, Jericho Park Road, Race Track Road. Rte. 197, 11th Street, Chestnut Avenue, 9th Street, LanhamSevern Road, Annapolis Road, Harkins Road and New Carrollton station.

Route T16: Trips will terminate at the New Carrollton Metro station instead of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station via Beltway Plaza, Cunningham Drive, Greenbelt Road, Lakecrest Drive, Lakeside Drive, West Way, Crescent Road, Garden Way, Ridge Road, South Way, Greenbelt Road, NASA, Greenbelt Road, Good Luck Road, Doctor's Hospital, Good Luck Road, Cipriano Road, LanhamSevern Road, Annapolis Road, Harkins Road and New Carrollton station.

Route T17: Trips will terminate at the New Carrollton station instead of the Rhode Island Avenue station.

Route T18: New route between the New Carrollton Metro station and the Rhode Island Avenue station via Matapony, using Harkins Road, Annapolis Road, 57th Avenue, Emerson Street, 58th Avenue, 57th Avenue, Annapolis Road. Bladensburg Road, 38th Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue. Rush-hour trips will permit boarding and alighting in Maryland, with alighting only in D.C. inbound and boarding only in D.C. outbound. Non rush-hour trips will permit boarding and alighting at any stop along the route.

Route T19: Trips will terminate at the New Carrollton Metro station instead of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, with a new routing in Crofton via Crofton Parkway, Crawford Boulevard, Rte. 3, Annapolis Road, Stonybrook Drive, Belair Center, Sage Lane, Stonybrook Drive, Buckingham Drive, Belair Drive Kembridge Drive, Kenhill Drive and Rte. 197.

Route U2: Eliminated in Maryland. Alternate service is available via Route F14 or Route P12.

Routes V11 and V12: Additional weekdays, Saturday and Sunday trips between Penn Mar and the Potomac Avenue station or 11th and Pennsylvania Avenue will be provided, replacing Route B12.

Route W17: Extra trips will be added. All trips will be rerouted between Federal Center SW Metro station and Accokeek via South Capitol Street, Indian Head Highway, ABC Fringe Parking Lot, Indian Head Highway, Old Fort Road, Livingston Road, Washington Lane and regular route.

Route 84: Most trips will be extended to the New Carrollton Metro station. Trips will operate via regular route from Rhode Island Avenue Metro station to Riverdale Road and 66th Avenue, then via Riverdale Road, Auburn Avenue, Good Luck Road, Lamont Drive, Carrollton Parkway, 85th Place, Powhatan Street, Westbrook Drive, 85th Avenue, Annapolis Road, Harkins Road and the New Carrollton Metro station. District of Columbia Routes

Route A4: Trips will operate via current route to Martin Luther King Avenue and Irvington Street SW, to the terminal east of Martin Luther King Avenue.

Route A 4: Trips will operate via present route to Martin Luther King Avenue and Chesapeake Street SW, then via Chesapeake Street, Overlook Avenue, cutoff to I-295 and D.C. Village to the terminal at the Fire Department Training Center.

Route A6: Trips will operate via regular route to Martin Luther King Avenue and Randle Place SE, then via Randle Place, Alabama Avenue, Wheeler Road, Varney Street, 13th Street, Valley Avenue, Wheeler Road, Southern Avenue, 6th Street, Chesapeake Street, 4th Street, Livingston Terrace, 3rd Street and to the terminal at 4501 3rd Street SW.

Route U2: Revised to operate between the Deanwood Metro station and Minnesota Avenue and Ridge Road SE via the Minnesota Avenue Metro station. Trips will operate via Minnesota Avenue, Eastern Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, Minnesota Avenue, Ridge Road, Anacostia Road and B Street to the Ridge Road terminal.

Route U4: Revised to operate between Sheriff Road and the Minnesota Avenue station via Eastern Avenue, Lee Street, 51st Street, Sheriff Road, Minnesota Avenue and the Minnesota Avenue Metro station.

Route U6: Revised to operate between the Minnesota Avenue Metro station and Capitol View via E Street, 54th Street, Central Avenue, Minnesota Avenue and the Minnesota Avenue Metro station.

Route U8: Eliminated. Replaced by extended Route V4.

Route V4: Extended to the Minnesota Avenue Metro station via regular route to Ridge Road and Texas Avenue SE, then via E Street, Alabama Avenue, H Street, Benning Road, Minnesota Avenue and the Minnesota Avenue station.

Route V 4: From Ridge Road to the B Street terminal, trips will operate via Ridge Road, Texas Avenue, E Street, Alabama Avenue, H Street, Benning Road, Minnesota Avenue and the Minnesota AAvenue Metro station.

Route W4: Trips to or from Capital Plaza will be rerouted to serve the Deanwood Metro station via Minnesota Avenue.

Route W 4: Trips will terminate at the Deanwood Metro station instead of Kenilworth via present route to Eastern Avenue and Minnesota Avenue, then into the Deanwood station.

Route X1: Changed to operate between Minnesota Avenue Metro station and Potomac Park via Union Station and Louisiana Avenue.

Route X2: Revised to operate via the Minnesota Avenue Metro station and via Union Station. Owl service will remain the same except that stops at Minnesota Avenue Metro station and the Union Station Metrobus terminal will not be made.

Route X3: Rerouted to operate between the Minnesota Avenue Metro station and McLean Gardens with extra trips added in the evening rush hour.

Route X4: New route will operate between the Minnesota Avenue Metro station and Lafayette Square via Minnesota Avenue, Benning Road, H Street NE, Union Station, H Street NW, New York Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue to Jackson Place.

Route X5 (Owl trips). This will replace owl service on Route U6 and will operate between Lafayette Square and Seat Pleasant via Jackson Place, H Street, Benning Road, East Capitol Street, Southern Avenue, 63rd Street, Eastern Avenue, Dix Street and 62nd Street to the Seat Pleasant terminal.

Route X6: Will operate from Lafayette Square to Mayfair via H Street, Union Station, H Street, Benning Road, Minnesota Avenue, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue and Mayfair loop returning to the Minnesota Avenue station.

Route 60: Selected weekday trips will be extended to Buzzard Point and designated Route 62.

Route 88: Eliminated.D.C. service (Rhode Island Avenue station to Mount Rainier) will be replaced by additional 82 Mount Rainier trips. Maryland service (Mount Rainier to Cheverly) will be replaced by an extension of route F2 over the same routing that the 88 now uses.
