Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today -- Increasing cloudiness, visibility less than five miles. Winds will southerly at 20 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be 2 to 4 feet.

Extended Area Outlook for Tuesday through Thursday: There will be a chance of rain on Tuesday followed be fair weather Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will continue a little above normal with highs averaging in the 50s to around 60 and lows from the 40s to near 50 early in the period. There will be 30 degree temperatures in the mountains and mid 40s in eastern portions later in the period. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 48 and a low of 31.

West Virginia: Today -- Occasional rain, high in the 50s, low in the 40s. Monday -- Rain likely, high in upper 40s to 50s.

The Nation Yesterday: Snow continues from Rockies into north central Plains. A major winter storm continued to bring snow or freezing precipitation to much of the nations midsection. Snow was falling over a large area from the central Rockies across northern Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. The greatest accumulations were reported over Nebraska, where Norfolk and Sidney had 11 inches and Valentine had 10 inches. Gusty winds and temperatures in the low teens were creating near blizzard conditions in parts of northern Nebraska. Freezing drizzle extended from central Kansas across northern Missouri, while freezing rain was increasing over central Illinois and northern Indiana. A freezing rain warning was issued over the northern third of Indiana. Heavy snow warnings were posted for tonight over all of Iowa and central and southeastern Nebraska. Winter storm warnings were out over northern and western Kansas and the mountains and eastern portion of Colorado.Winter storm watches were in effect for much of the southern Great Lakes region. Chicago, which received 10 inches of snow yesterday, again had the possibility of heavy snow by Sunday.

The National Weather Forecast for today -- Snow will fall over western and northern New England, the southern Great Lakes region and across Iowa and northern Missouri to eastern Kansas. A large area of rain with a few thunderstorms will reach from the lower Mississippi Valley across the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys to the middle and northern Atlantic Coast. Local areas of freezing rain or sleet are likely over the upper Ohio Valley and southern New England. The remainder of the nation will be mostly dry, except for a few snow showers in the Rockies and rain showers in northwestern Washington. Cold temperatures will continue over the western half of the country, although it will be slightly warmer over the northern Plains. It will be cool or cold in the Northeast, and generally mild across the Southeast.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10 a.m. period was 6 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0 and 25 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain at 3.2 feet today.
