Extended Area Forecast for Wednesday through Friday -- Chance of showers in the mountains on Wednesday and elsewhere on Friday. Otherwise the weather will be fair. Highs will average from the 40s to the mid 50s, lows from the mid 20s to the low 30s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 47 and a low of 31.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Showers likely, with a possible thunderstorm. Visibility will be less than 1 mile in rain and fog. Winds will be from the south at 15 to 25 knots shifting to the west at 10 to 20 knots. Waves will average 2 to 4 feet.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac Irver stage at Little Falls should fall from 3.4 to 3.3 feet today.

The Nation Yesterday: A mixture of record warm temperatures, heavy rain, and tornadoes interrupted the weekend activities of southerners. Northeastern Mississippi was rocked by 4 tornadoes. Rain drenched western Arkansas and western Tennessee. Sunshine over the Southeast pushed the mercury into the middle 80s breaking records across Florida and the eastern Gulf Coast. Thundershowers passed through the Texas Coast and Louisiana into Tennessee. Snowfall continued over the Great Lakes region and New England. Large amounts of snow covered the northern portions of the nation. The western half of the nation was dry. A few snowshowers lingered in the northern Rockies, but otherwise skies were fair. Temperatures were still very cold in the northern Plains. The Pacific Northwest had a few showers with temperatures above freezing.

The National Weather Forecast for Today -- Snowfall will occur in the northern Rocky Mountains and a small area of the upper Great Lakes region. Warmer weather is headed for the northeastern corner of the nation along with heavy rain. The rain will continue from northern Alabama and South Carolina to lower Michigan and New England. Showers will also spread across the Pacific Northwest. Even with sunny skies the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley will not warm above freezing. The most pleasant weather will be in Florida with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. The remainder of the southern states will be partly cloudy and cooler as will the Southwest and the West Coast.
