Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain beginning tonight, highs will range from the 40s in the mountains to the mid 60s along the coast, lows will be from the 20s to the 40s. Wednesday -- Cloudy with a chance of showers, high in the 40s and 50s.

West Virginia: Today -- Gradual clearing and cool, high in the 40s, lows from the mid 20s to the mid 30s. Wednesday -- Sunny, high in the 40s.

Extended Area Forecast from Thursday through Saturday -- Partly cloudy Thursday with a chance of precipitation on Friday and Saturday. Highs will average from the 30s on Thursday to near 50 on Saturday. Lows will range from the mid 20s to the low 30s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 47 and a low of 31.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Variable cloudiness with a chance of showers. Visibility will be 1 to 5 miles. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 15knots shifting to the south at near 10 knos tonight. Waves will average 1 to 2 feet.

The Nation Yesterday: A strong cold front pushed rain and thundershowers over the southeastern quarter of the nation. The thundershowers were mostly along the northwest Florida Coast with a few along the coast of the Carolinas. Light rain spread from southern Mississippi, through eastern Tennessee and into the Virginias. Sunny skies and record high temperatures covered most of Florida and the southern Atlantic Coast. Temperature readings in the 60s reached into the Virginias and New Jersey. The Southwest, the Mississippi Valley and most of the Plains had sunny skies, as cool dry air dipped into Texas and Louisiana. A cold front across the Pacific Northwest was spreading snow across the northern Rockies. Heavy rains along the Oregon coast was causing flooding. Snow covered the ground across the northern Plains to the Great Lakes region and the temperatures reflected this.

The National Weather Forecast for today -- Rain will spread into New England with a few snow showers in northern Maine. Rain and thundershowers will continue over the southern Atlantic Coast. The Pacific Northwest will have rain while snow will move across the northern Rockles into the northern Plains. The remainder of the nation will be mostly sunny. It will not warm above freezing across the northern Rockies and the northern Plains. Most of the nation will remain cool.

The Council of Government's Air Qualify Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 7 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0-24 indicate good air qualify. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.
