Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Sunny, highs from the 50s to the low 60s, lows from the 20s in the west to the 30s in the east. Thursday -- Increasing cloudiness, highs again from the 50s to the low 60.

West Virginia: Today -- Sunny, high from the mid 40s in the northern panhandle to the low 60s, lows from the mid 20s to the low 40s. Thursday -- Partly cloudy, chance of rain, highs again from the mid 40s to the low 60s.

Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday -- Periods of rain likely during Friday and Saturday followed by gradual clearing. Friday will be mild with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. The rest of the period will be colder with highs from the mid 30s to the mid 40s, lows in the 20s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 47 and a low of 31.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Winds will be out of the northeast at 10 to 15 knots. Waves will average less than 2 feet.

The Nation Yesterday: A winter storm continued to bring snow, very cold temperatures and gusty winds to the central Rockies. Snow fell over Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, also spreading into northwestern New Mexico and northwest Kansas. Very cold air and gusty winds whipped the snow and lowered visibilities as the storm movet southward. Light snow fell over parts of the Great Lakes region. A few showers and thundershowers developed over eastern pertions of North Carolina and eastern Virginia.The northern Intermoutain region, the northern Rockies and the northern Great Plains were the coldest parts of the nation with afternoon temperatures in the teens.

The National Weather Forecast for Today -- Snow showers will extend from southern Montana, through eastern Idaho and northern Ufah, and also over the northern and lower Great Lakes region. Snew will reach from Wyoming, over the south and central Rockies across Nebraska and Kansas into western Missouri, Oklahoma and northwest Texas. It will be windy over the southern California mountains and deserts. Most of the rest of the nation will have partly cloudy skies. Cold temperatures will continue over the northern Rockies the Pacific Northwest and the northern Great Plains. It will be much colder from the upper Mississippi Valley across the central Great Plains and the central Rockies. It will begin turning colder in the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley, and from the mid Mississippi Valley through southern Rockies. Mild temperatures will continue from the mid and south Atlantic Coast states, over the Gulf Coast states and southern Texas.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 7 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should rise from 3.5 to 4.0 feet today.
