The Nation Yesterday: Heavy snow continued over the south and central Rockies and also spread eastward into Kansas and western Nebraska. Freezing rain jumped ahead of the snow into northeast-Oklahoma and southwestern Misouri. Snow was still falling over southern Wyoming with snow showers persisting over parts of the Arizona and Utah mountains. Winter storm watches were issued for today and tonight for lows, Wisconsin, lower Michigan, northern Indiana. Illinois and southeastern Minnesota. Freezing rain may precede the snow from parts of Iowa across lower Michigan. Strong gusty winds with blowing and drifting snow lowered visibilities over the Rockies and along with the very cold temperatures created Ipcal near blizzard conditions. It was very cold in the upper Mississippi Valley and from the northern Great Plains across the central Rockies, where temperatures remained near the zero mark.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Snow showers will continue over the mountains of northern Arizona and eastern Utah. Snow will also spread from the south and central Rockies through western Texas and northwest Oklahoma, and from the central Great Plains through[WORDS ILLEGIBLE] northern parts of the mid Mississppi Valley and across the upper Great Lakes region. A band of freezing rain will proceed south of the snow from the southern Great Lakes region to central Illinois. Rain, with scattered showers and thundershowers in the southern portions, will extend from Texas across the lower Mississppi Valley and the Tennessee and the Ohio Valleys over the western slopes of the Appalachlans and Alabama. Mild temperatures will continue from the Texas coast through the lower Mississippi and the Ohio Valleys across the south Atlantic Coast States. Cool weather will extend from Virginia through New England, but elsewhere it will be cold.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality.When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 3.5 feet today.
