The Nation Yesterday: There was little precipitation across the nation yesterday. Snowfall was widely scattered, with showers reported in parts of the northern Rockles, the northern Plains, and the eastern Great Lakes. Temperatures were mostly at or below freezing from the Rockies across the northern Plains to Lake Superior. The area from eastern New York State and eastern Pennsylvania through New England was also below freezing. Readings elsewhere around the nation ranged from the mid 30s into the 60s. Clear and partly clear skies graced the southern Rockies, the southern Plains, the southern Mississippi Valley, and the middle Atlantic Coast.

The National Weather Forecast for Today: Snow or snow showers will range from the Great Lakes through New England. Skies will be mostly sunny from the Rockies across the Plains, the southern Mississippi Valley, and the middle Atlantic Coast. Temperatures will be mild from New England to the lower Great Lakes, the Carolinas and into portions of the Tennessee Valley. Temperatures elsewhere will be cold.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 13 fort the pollutant, Photochemical oxidans, Index values between 0-24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye aliments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good.
