Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Visibility will be five miles or more. Winds will be from the southwest at 18 to 30 knots and gusty. Waves will be from three to four feet.

The Nation Yesterday: Rain fell through the upper Ohio Valley, middle Atlantic Coast States and the Carolinas, with widely scattered showers through the Gulf Coast states and Washington state coast. Snowfall was light, confined primarilu to the upper Great Lakes region. Clear skies prevailed from the northern and central Plains through the upper and middle Mississppi Valley. Elsewhere cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions were noted. Temperatures were in the 50s and 60s over much of California and the Gulf Coast states, with 70s in the south-western deserts and southern Florida. Readins in the teens and 20s were the rule for much of the northern and central Rockies, northern half of the Plains and Upper Mississppi Valley. Most of the rest of the nation reported temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

The National Weather Forecast for Today: Snow will reach from New York state through New England with rain over the coastal portion of the area. Rain will also fall along the central and north Pacific Coast, changing to snow in the mountains through the northern plateau. Rain is forecast for much of Arizona, while strong winds are expected from Utah into south-eastern Idaho. The remainder fo the nation will have sunny or mostly sunny skies. Reasonably mild temperatures will reach from the northern and central Plains through the Upper and middle Mississppi Valley, upper Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and much of the middle and north Atlantic Coast states. Cold readings will prevail over western Colorado, with cool temperatures elsewhere over the nation.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, sulfer di-oxide. Index values between 0-24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity, The forecast for today indicates that the air qualtiy will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 3.8 feet today.
