A 30-year-old Wheaton man was killed yesterday morning when he was thrown from a jeep after it was struck by another car at the intersection of Viers Mill and Newport Mill roads in Wheaton, Montgomery County police reported.

Police said David P. Rotkin of 11504 Regnid Dr. was a passenger in a jeep driven by William F. Macker, 21, of 9908 Edward Ave., Bethesda. According to police, Macker was southbound on Newport Mill Road at about 1 a.m. when he ran a flashing red light and was struck by a car driven by Mark E. Harding of 3100 McComas Ave., Kensington.

The jeep was spun around by the impact, and Rotkin was thrown out against a curb. He died almost instantly apparently of massive head injuries.

A second passenger, Christopher Alan Martin, 23, of 9915 Dickens Ave., Bethesda was also thrown from the jeep. He was admitted to Suburban Hospital with serious injuries.

Harding, who was traveling alone, was treated at the hospital for a broken hand and released.

Macker was admitted to the hospital with leginjuries. Police yesterday charged him with manslaughter by automobile, drivingunder the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and failure to obey a flashing red signal.
