Extended Area Forecast for Wednesday through Friday-A chance of preciptation Wednesday, fair Thursday and Friday. Highs will average from the 40s to the mid 50s, lows from the 30s to the lower 40s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 44 and a low of 28.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay-Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Winds will be from the north at 10 to 20 knots. Waves will average 2 to 3 feet.

The Nation Yesterday: A winter storm system moved across the Pacific Coast spreading snow from the North and central Plateau into the central Rockies.Up to 7 inches of new snow has been reported in portions of Utah. The storm also produced strong winds. To the west, in warmer air, the storm spread rain along the Pacific Coast into southern Arizona. Winter also renewed its grasp in the Northeast. Snow and gusty winds were prevalent over much of New York and New England. Locally heavy snow was recorded. Elsewhere skies were mostly clear from the Mississippi Valley through the Atlantic Coast as far north as southern Pennsylania. Mild temperatures continued over the Midwest with afternoon highs reaching the upper 40s and 50s from the southern half of the Plains into the southern half of the Atlantic Coast.

The National Weather Forecast for today-Rain will fall along the Pacific Coast and into southern Arizona, with snow spreading over the remainder of the Plateau, the Rockies and the eastern half of Montana. Snow will also continue across much of the eastern half of New York state, northern New England and northern Maine. Skies will be cloudy over the northern half of the Plains and southern Texas, with mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Seasonably mild temperatures will persist over the southern half of the Plains, the Mississippi Valley, the western half of the Ohio Valley and the Gulf Coast states. Cool to cold temperatures are forecast for the remaining western and northeastern portions of the country.

Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 9 a.m. period was 10 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain in the good range.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should fall from 3.6 to 3.4 feet today.
