A 17-year-old Prince George's County youth was shot three times by an off-duty Fairfax County police officer in a Seabrook parking lot yesterday after the youth allegedly drew a gun and demanded money from the officer, Prince George's County police reported.

Police said Officer Robert Vernola, 29, was leaving the Veterans of Foreign Wars clubhouse at about 1 a.m. and was walking toward his car, parked on a nearby lot in the 9800 block of Goodluck Road when the youth approached him.

According to police, the youth pulled a gun and demanded money from Vernola. Vernola said he didn't have any, police said, so the youth ordered him to open his car and get money there.

Instead, Vernola opened his car door and pulled out his gun, police said. When he turned toward the youth holding the gun, the youth shot at him once, missing.Vernola then opened fire and the youth was struck in the right shoulder, leg and arm, police said.

The youth, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was transported to Prince George's General Hospital where he was listed in satisfactory condition yesterday. Vernola was unhurt.
