Hoping to encourage commuters to use public transporation and stop driving their cars to work, the D.C. City Council has voted to bar nonresidents from parking on another 172 blocks of the city's streets.

About 3,400 more spaces will be off limits for more than two hours of parking by nonresidents as a result of the action. Enforcement will be begin as soon as signs can be erected. Neighborhood residents who buy stickers from the city can continue to park for longer periods.

More than 10 percent of the city streets are covered such bans.

The latest expansions of the no-parking regulation are in six of the city's seven election wards, notably in areas where Metrorail stations are located or where there is good bus service into downtown.

Officials say commutres habitually park free on the streets and take transit downtown.

The areas where the new restrictions will take effect are:

In Ward 1, in the Adams-Morgan area and around Howard University. A study showed that all the legal parking spaces on 18 blocks were filled to capacity during business hours, with other cars parking illegally.

In Ward 2, around Dupont Circle and Logan Circle. A similar study showed that all the legal spaces on 13 blocks were filled to capacity, with a majority of the cars coming from out of the District.
