The Nation Yesterday: Cold fronts across the northern half of the nation spread scattered snowshowers thru the Great Lakes Region, parts of the northern Plains, and the northern Rockies. Temperatures in the Dakotas and Minnesota were below zero with freezing temperatures dipping into Kansas and northern Missouri. Southern Missouri and Oklahoma were in the 50s. Rain fell along the entire Gulf Coast. Partly cloudy skies stretched through the Atlantic Coast states into New England. Freezing temperatures dipped into the eastern Ohio valley and northern Virginia. The southwestern corner of the country had fair weather. Emperatures were in the 50s, with the 60s in California. Light rain and mild readings continued across the Oregon and Washington Coast, a few places were in the 50s.

The National Weather Forecast for Today: Rain will cover Washington State and extreme northern Oregon, changing to snow in the northern Rockies and spread across the extreme northern Plains. Snow will also fall over the central Great Lakes, with flurries likely in northern New England. Rain will fall over much of the remainder of the country east of the Mississippi River. Skies will be sunny to mostly sunny from the south-western corner of the nation through the southern and central Plains. Temperatures will be mild to cool from the central Great Lakes to New England, and along the East Coast through Florida. Cold readings will previal elsewhere.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10a.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good. The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage around 3.8 feet today.
