Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturdy-Fair and cold through the period. Highs will average in the 30s, lows in the teens and 20s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 43 and a low of 28.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay-Chance of snow flurries. Visibility will be 5 miles or more. Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 15 knots, shifting to the northwest at 10 to 15 knots by nightfall. Waves will average 1 to 2 feet.

The Nation Yesterday: A strong storm system lingered along the coast of Maine whipping up snow as heavy snowshowers continued from western New York into New England. Hardest hit were the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York; 2 feet of snow covered many places. The remainder of the nation had a cool, sunny day. Only a few snow showers lingered over the upper Mississippi Valley. Light snowshowers continued over much of the Great Lakes region Temperature readings were in the 60s along the Gulf Coast and in the 70s in southern Texas and Florida. The West Coast had partly cloudy skies with temperature readings in the 50s. It was cool and partly cloudy through the Pacific Northwest. The Rockies remained cold with fair skies.

The National Weather Forecast for today-Most of the nation will be sunny and cool. Snowshowers will be scattered over most of the Great Lakes region, the Ohio Valley and New England. A few snowshowers will continue over the northern Rockies. Freezing temperatures will cover the northern third of the nation. Across the Gulf Coast temperatures will be in the 60s with readings across southern Texas and southern Florida in the 70s. The West Coast will have highs in the 60s with the Pacific Northwest in the 40s.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10 a.m. period was 16 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should rise from 4.5 to near 4.9 feet today.
