Maryland and Virginia: Today and Thursday -- Mostly sunny and cold with a chance of flurries in the mountains, highs from the 20s to the mid 30s, lows from zero to near 20.

West Virginia: Today and Thursday -- Sunny and cold, highs from 10 above to the low 20s, lows from 5 below zero to 5 above zero.

Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday -- Fair and cold with some moderation of temperatures over the weekend. Highs will average from the mid 20s to the mid 30s, lows in the teens and 20s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 43 and a low of 28.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 2/ knots. Waves will average 2 to 4 feet.

The Nation Yesterday: Hard freeze reached from southern Texas across the Gulf states into extreme northern Florida, as cold air continues to move eastward. Winds were also a problem along the New England coast and over the mountains of southeastern California. The National Weather Forecast for today -- Snow showers will be scattered over central Montana and the upper Great Lakes. Snow will extend from New England acress the lower Great Lakes. Snow will extend from New England across the lower Great Lakew through western Pennsylvania. Rainshowers will be widely scattered from southern Oregon into west central California. Temperatures will be very cold from Florida through Maryland across the uper Great Lakes to the Gulf, over the Mississipi Valley, much of the Plains and the upper Missouri Valley. Elsewhere over the nation temperatures will remain seasonably cold.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 8 for the pollutant, particulate matter. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart land eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should rise from 5.1 feet to 5.5 feet today.
