Washington: Today -- Fair and cold, high 25 to 30, low in the teens. The chance of precipitation is near zero through tonight. Friday -- Fair, high near 30. Winds will be westerly at 5 to 10 m.p.h.

Maryland and Virginia: Today and Friday -- Fair and cold, highs from the 20s to the mid 30s, low mostly in the teens.

West Virginia: Today and Frida -- Partly cloudy, highs from the low teens to the low 20s, lows from 10 below to 5 above.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Winds will be from the northwest at 12 to 20 knots dminishing to 6 to 12 knots during the evening.

Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday -- Cold through the period with a chance of rain or snowon Sunday. Highs will average from the mid 20s, to the low 40s, lows will be in the teens and 20s. Normal Washington area temperatures are a high of 43 and a low of 28.

The National Wester Forecast for today -- Scattered rain will reach from western Oregon through California and Arizona. Eastern Oregon, the north and central Rockies and all of the Inteermountain region except Arizona will see snow showers. There shall be snow flurries from northern Maine acroww northern and western New York with snow squalls near the Great Lakes. In other states east of the Mississippi River, most skies will be sunny or fair, while to the west cloudy or partly skies will prevail. It will be very cold from Montana across most of the Great Plains, the northern half of the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley into portions of the mid Atlantic Coast states. It will still be cold but not as cold in the remainder of the nation.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 16 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should crest near 6.3 feet this morning.
