Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Rain with poor visibility, snow or sleet possible tonight. Winds from the southeast at 10 to 20 knots. Waves will be around 1 foot.

The National Weather Forecast for today: Rain will reach from south Texas across most of the lower Mississippi Valley and through Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia. Snow will stretch from the New Mexico mountains, over Oklahoma and Arkansas through the mid Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and across New England. Flurries will dot northern Arizona the Colorado Rockies. Partly cloudy skies will prevail elsewhere in the nation. Very cold weather will continue over the northern Rockies and from the south and central Great Plains across most of the mid Mississippi Valley Except for southern Florida the remainder of the nation will be cold.

The Nation Yesterday: Freezing rain extended from west and north Texas across Arkansas into western portions of Kentucky and Tennessee. Snow was scattered from southern New England into Delaware, across the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. Rain extended from east Texas across Louisiana and interior portions of the eastern Gulf States into the Carolinas.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10 a.m. period was 6 for the pollutant, Photochemical Oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air qually will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should fall to near 4.8 feet today.
