Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Sonow changing to rain, highs in the upper 30s, lows in the lower 30s. Saturday -- Rain, highs in the 30s.

West Virginia: Today -- Snow changing to freezing rain, highs near 30, lows in low 20s. Saturday -- Rain, highs in mid 30s.

Extended Area Forecast for Sunday through Tuesday -- Snow or rain likely but ending Sunday. Fair Monday and Tuesday, highs near 40, lows near 20.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Snow changing to freezing rain with fog. Winds from the northeast at 12 to 20 knots. Waves will be from 2 to 3 feet. Visibility will be poor.

The Nation Yesterday: Rain fell from the northern half of California through the Great Basin and changed to snow across the Northern Plateau and northern and central Rockies. Snow also reached from the eastern half of the Dakotas southward into northeastern Oklahoma and across the upper and middle Mississippi Valley. Rain prevailed along the Gulf Coast and across Central Florida. Temperatures remained unseasonably cold across the northeastern third of the nation, with affernoon maximums in the 20s or less across the northern and central Plains, along the Mississippi Valley from Arkansas northward, and into the Ohio Valley and northern and middle Atlantic Coast States.

The National Weather Forecast for today -- Snow will extend from Virginia and Delaware into northern New England, across the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Snow will become freezing rain across southern portions of the Ohio Valley, with rain scattered from the lower Mississippi Valley across the Tennessee Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast from Florida through the Carolinas. Sonow will also reach from Kansas through the central and upper Missouri Valley across the northern and central Rockies to eastern Washington, Utah and much of Nevada. Rain will extend across the Pacific Coast from Washington through central California. Temperatures will be very cold from the Missouri Valley into northwestern portions of the Ohio Valley. Elsewhere across the nation temperatures will be seasonably cold.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, oxidants. Index values between 0-24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should fall to 4.6 feet today.
