Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Snow changing to freezing rain or rain, highs from near 40 to near 50, lows from the low 30s to near 40. Sunday -- Rain ending, highs from the mid 40s to the mid 50s.

West Virginia: Today -- Rain, highs from the upper 30s to the mid 40s, lows from the mid to upper 20s. Sunday -- Snow or rain likely, highs mostly in the 30s.

Extended Area Forecast for Monday through Wednesday -- Fair on Monday, with rain or snow likely on Tuesday and Wednesday, highs from the mid 20s to the mid 30s, lows from the low teens to the mid 20s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Occasional rain, with scattered fog and poor visibility. Winds will be from the south at 12 to 25 knots. Waves will average 1 to 3 feet.

The Nation Yesterday -- Two frontal systems produced miserable weather conditions over most of the nation. Cloudy skies and freezing weather spread across the Rockies and the middle Plains. A stationary front in the northern Gulf of Mexico brought rain to the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast, with ice and snow to the Great Lakes and into New England. Heavy snowfall fell across the Central Plains. The Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley had light snow, as did the interior sections of New England. Rain continued along the Pacific Northwest, while snowshowers passed through the Cascades of Washington into the northern Rockies. Temperatures dipped below freezing in northern Missouri and southern Kansas. Below zero readings covered the northern Plains from Minnesota into northern Nebraska. Temperatures nearly reached 80 degrees in southern Florida. The National Weather Forecast for today: Most of the nation will see clouds. Rain will continue from the lower Mississippi Valley to the southern Atlantic Coast, and into southern New England. Snow will spread across the middle Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes into New England. Snowshowers will move through the Cascades of Washington into the Northern Rockies. Rain will scatter from the coast of Washington into northern California. Welcome sunshine will break through over the northern Plains, the foothills of the southern Rockies the southwest, and the west coast. The northern Plains will remain cold, below zero in North Dakota and Montana. Freezing temperatures will dip into northern Texas while southern Florida will reach the upper 70s. The remainder of the nation will be cold.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 15 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should fall to 4.4 feet today.
