The Rev. Edward W. McCawley, S.J., a teacher for many years at Gonzaga College High School here, died Sunday in Philadelphia at the age of 70. He had suffered a stroke several years ago.

Father McCawley first taught physics and mathematics at Gonzaga from 1946 to 1949. After five years at Saint Joseph's College Preparatory School in Philadelphia, he returned to Gonzaga and was a physics teacher there until 1970.

He was born in Lackawanna, N.Y., and entered the Society of Jesus at the Jesuit Novitiate in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1928. He studied at the Jesuit Novitiate in Wernersville, Pa., and at Woodstock College in Maryland.

After teaching in New York City, Father McCawley returned to Woodstock College to study theology. He was ordained there in 1942. He taught at Georgetown Preparatory School for two years before joining the Gonzaga faculty.

While at Gonzaga, Father McCawley was chaplain of the Little Sisters of the Poor. After leaving Gonzaga, he was assistant pastor at Mount Calvary Church in Forestville for four years and then at Sacred Heart Church in LaPlata for a year.

He is survived by three brothers, Thomas J., of Arlington, John T., of Forestville, and James P., of Phoenix, Ariz.
