Extended Area Forecast for Sunday through Tuesday -- Turning colder with chance of rain or snow Sunday and Monday. Fair on Uesday. Highs will be from the 30s to low 40s, lows from the mid teens to low 30s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today -- Chance of flurries diminishing tonight. Visibility will be poor. Winds will be from the northwest at 12 to 20 knots. Waves will be from 1 to 2 feet.

The Council of Governments, Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 10 for the pollutant, Photochemical Oxldants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the indes exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should crest between 10 and 10.5 feet around 7 a.m. today.

The Nation Yesterday: Rain fell from Oklahoma across eastern and southern Texas into Louisiana, with sleet reported in eastern Oklahoma, southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana. Snow fell from Missouri and northern Arkansas westward across the central and soutern Rockies into portions of the central and southern Plateau. Snow also extended into portions of the upper Ohio Valley and remainder of the lower Great Lakes area.Flooding threatened in some parts of eastern New York State and central and southern New England due to water from previous heavy rains. Winds along the coastal areas continued to be strong.

The National Weather Forecast for Today -- Snow will fall from the central and southern Rockies into the upper and middle Mississippi Valley and from the upper Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes through New England. There will be freezing precipitation in the eastern portion of the middle Mississippi Valley and in the lower Ohio Valley. Rain will range from the eastern two thirds of Texas across the lower Mississippi Valley into parts of Tennessee and Georgia. Rain is also likely in western Washingtion State and the middle Atlantic Coast are. Mostly cold temperatures will prevail across the nation.
