Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Partly cloudy, windy and cold, highs from 20 to the mid 30s, lows from the teens to the mid 20s. Friday -- Mostly sunny, with diminishing winds, highs from the 20s to the 30s.

West Virginia: Today -- Partly cloudy with a chance of flurries, highs from the teens to the upper 20s, lows from zero to 12 above. Friday -- Partly cloudy, high from the low 20s to near 30.

Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday -- Chance of snow on Sunday. Otherwise variable cloudiness and cold through the period. Highs will be in the 20s and 30s, lows from 10 above to the low 20s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 44 and a low of 28.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Waves will build to 3 to 5 feet. Winds will be out of the northwest at 20 to 35 knots and gusting.

The Nation Yesterday: Rainshowers and thunderstorms occurred along the California coast. A waterspout was also sighted west of the Los Angeles airport. The rain changed to snow as it crossed the mountains. The storm system also brought snow to much of Arizona. Snow also fell in the Northeast extending across lower Michigan, the Ohio Valley, the Appalachians and much of the northern third of the Atlantic Coast.

The National Weather Forecast for Today -- Snowshowers will continue over the eastern half of the Ohio Valley, the lower Great Lakes region and northern New England. Snow will also reach from northern Arizona through the eastern half of the Great Basin, the central Rockies and into Nebraska, with light snow scattered over the northern Rockies and the northern Plateau. Rainshowers will continue from southern California into southern Arizona. Except for cloudy skies over the northern and central Plains the remainder of the nation will be sunny or partly sunny. It will be very cold over the northern half of the Rockies and across the central Plains, Oklahoma and Alabama into the central Gulf Coast states. The remainder of the country will be seasonably cold.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 10 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain in the good range.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should fall to near 4.8 feet today
