Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Mostly couldy, with a chance of flurries, highs from the high 20s to the low 40s, lows from the teens to the mid 20s. Sunday -- Cloudy, with a chance of flurries, highs in the 30s.

Extended Area Forecast for Monday through Wednesday -- Generally fain and continued cold, highs from the mid 20s to the low 30s, lows from the teens to the low 20s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Chance of flurries tonight, with good visibility lowering to poor. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 15 knots. Waves will be 2 feet or less.

The Nation Yesterday: An upper air weather disturbance continued to bring rain to southern California that turned to snow over the higher mountains. Other snow in the west was not as heavy, as light snow showers were reported in the central Arizona mountains, in northern New Mexico, Utah, and western Montana.

Light snow also fell from the western Great Lakes into the mid Mississippi Valley, while snow flurries continued from western New York across the north and central Appalachians.

Rain darnpened south Texas, Western Louisiana and southern Arkansas, and also part of the northwest coast of Washington. It was another yery cold winter day over most of the nation. The coldest afternoon temperatures were below the zero mark in Montana and the Dakotas. Temperatures remined in the single digits as far south as Nebraska, and readings in the 30s extended into Oklahoma and Northern Alabama.

Florida was chilly, with 50s in the north and 60s in the south. The warmest part of the nation, with temperatures near normal, was south Texas.

The National Weather Forecast for Today: Rain will fall over western Washington, with snow over the remainder of the Pacific Northwest across Montana and northern Wyoming. There will also be snow from the Ohio Valley over most of the Great Lakes and the north and central Appalachians into northern New England. Rain will reach from northern Florida, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Elsewhere, skies will be partly cloudy. It will be very cold from the northern mountain region across Montana and most of the Great plains, and will be quite cold from the southwestern states across the central Rockies and from the Mississippi Valley over the south and central Appalachians and the Carolinas. The remainder of the nation will be seasonably cold.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 18 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should fall to near 4.2 feet today.
