The Nation Yesterday: A frontal system over the eastern Gulf Coast spread rain from eastern Texas to South Carolina. Drizzle covered eastern Texas with light rain spreading from Louisiana into eastern Tennessee and Georgia. Bitter cold rushed onto the northern Plains. A cold front dipped into Nebraska bringing subzero temperatures and strong northerly winds. Gusts were producing near blizzard conditions in the area, lowering visibilities and driftng snow across roadways. Wth subzero readings and winds at 20 to 30 mph the wind chill was near 60 below. Rain moved through the Pacific Northwest Coast. The Great Lakes region and the upper Mississippi Valley had a few snowshowers. New England was mostly sunny with temperatures near freezing. Southern Florida had a sunny afternoon with readings near 70. Southern Texas, the Southwest and the West Coast were in the 60s. The National Weather Forecast for today -- Rain will continue along the Gulf Coast, especially across southeastern Texas. Snow will spread through the Great Lakes region, the eastern Ohio Valley and over the interior sections of New England. Rain will continue along the coast of the Pacific Northwest, turning to snow hrough the Cascades and the northern Rocky Mountains. The upper Mississippi Valley, the Great Plains and the southwestern quarter of the nation will be mostly sunny. Most of the nation will remain very cold with subzero temperatures from Lake Superior to the northern Rockles. Freezing weather will continue as far south as Oklahoma and Missouri. The Gulf Coast and the West Coast will be in the 60s while southern Florida will be sunny and in the middle 70s.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10 a.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air qualiry will continue to be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should remain between 4.2 and 4.3 feet today.
