Maryland and Virginia: Today -- Increasing cloudiness, highs in the 20s and the 30s, lows in the teens and 20s. Wednesday -- Snow, possibly changing to rain, highs in the 30s in Maryland in the 40s in Virginia.

West Virginia: Today -- Increasing cloudiness with a chance of snow late in the day, highs mostly in the 20s, lows in the teens. Wednesday -- Snow possibly mixed with sleet or freezing rain, highs from the mid 20s to the 30s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay -- Cloudy with snow or rain by nightfall. Visibility will be 5 miles or more lowering to less than 1 mile in precipitation. Winds will be variable at near 10 knots, becoming easterly at 8 to 15 knots by evening. Waves will average less than 2 feet.

Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday -- Chance of precipitation Saturday otherwise mostly fair. Highs will average in the 30s, lows in the 20s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 45 and a low of 28.

The Nation Yesterday: A warm front in the northern gulf of Mexico produced rain throughout the Gulf Coast states. Temperatures were below freezing in northern Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The rain was heaviest in warmer weather along the coast. Temperatures fell below freezing across northern Mississippi and northern Alabama.A few snowshowers continued around the Great Lakes region.Rainshowers were scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest coast while snow continued over the Cascades and the northern Rockies into western Montana. Bitter cold gripped the Plains. Minnesota remained below zero and northern Texas was below freezing. The Southwest was pleasant with fair skies and temperatures in the 60s.

The National Weather Forecast for today -- Rain will continue over the Gulf Coast states, pushing northward into Arkansas, Tennessee and the middle Atlantic Coast states. Snow will be scattered across the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley. Rain will persist through the Pacific Northwest turning to snow in the higher elevations. The northern Plains will be cloudy with a few snow flurries. The southern Plains and the Southwest will be sunny. Freezing weather will continue over the northern half of the nation except in the Pacific Northwest. The Gulf Coast will be in the 40s with the Southwest in the 60s. Southern Florida will be sunny and in the middle 70s.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 24 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should fall from 4.1 to 4.0 feet today.
