A 12-year-old Montgomery County special education student told a County Circuit Court jury yesterday that his teacher, 44-year-old Hunter Pope Mulford, sexually molested him last September.

On the first day of Mulford's trial, the boy testified that Mulford, then a teacher at Newport Middle School in Kensington, engaged in a sexual act with him after he and a friend spent the night in Mulford's room at a school retreat in Rockville.

The student said an 11-year-old friend invited him to Mulford's room to spend the night and that the friend asked Mulford to rub his back. The boy testified that he then asked Mulford to rub his back.

The boy said that as he rested on his side facing away from Mulford, the teacher fondled him. He testified that Mulford then left the room, but returned late and performed a sexual act on him.

When asked by Mulford's attorney, Ronald Willis, why he later told teachers that the alleged offense had not occurred, the boy said that he did not want other children to tease him.

Mulford is charged with having sexual contact with a person under 14 and with committing an unnatural and perverted sex act with the boy. He is charged also with assault and battery for allegedly touching the boy unlawfully.

Mulford is charged in addition with separate counts of assault and battery and illegal sexual conduct stemming from his alleged conduct with the second boy.
