The Georgetown University School of Dentistry has joined with SOME (So Others May Eat) to establish a dental health center for low-income patients at SOME headquarters at 71 O St. NW.

The dental clinic is directed by Dr. Gregory Lakas and four senior dental students from Georgetown. They provide care on an appointment and emergency basis, and ask patients for donations to defray costs.

SOME, a non-profits organziation that provides many services to the city's poor and homeless, serves about 300 meals daily to the indigent.

The new dental clinic's summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The number to call is 332-2220.

The O Street clinic is one of several centers in the District that provide low-cost dental care. The clinics, usually operated by the D.C. government or local unversities, offer a range of services to children and adults. Fees are generally set according to the patient's income or are paid by Medicaid.

"Dental services (provided by the D.C. government) have been very fragmented," said Dr. Joseph Payne, of the Department of Human Resources medical assistance unit. "We are trying now to organize them and centralize reponsibility" for them.

In fact, it took more than 15 telephone calls to various D.C. agencies to get even a partial listing of city-sponsored clinics. No one with a complete list could be located.

The age groups served and the services offered vary from clinic to clinic, so prospective patients are advised to call ahead. Some city-sponsored clinics include:
