Daniel E. Shook Jr., 56, a retired Air Force sergeant who was a security investigator for Safeway, died of renal failure Thursday at the Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton.
Mr. Shook joined the Army Air Corps before World War II and served in Special Services in this country and in Europe. In 1956, he was assigned to Bolling Air Force Base here where he coached the base basketball team to several Middle-Atlantic Service Athletic Conference (MASAC) championships.
After retiring from the military in 1960, he worked as a security guard for Burns International Security Services and The Wackenhut Corp. He transferred to Safeway Stores Inc. in 1969 and was a security investigator at its distribution center in Landover.
Mr. Shook was born in Baltimore, Ohio.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Edith M., and a daughter, Deidre V. Alexander, both of the home in Charles County, Md.; a son, Elroy, of Temple Hills; a brother, John, and a sister, Susan Beatty, both of Lancaster, Ohio; another sister, Millie Mae Davidson, of Canal Winchester, Ohio; his father, Daniel E. Sr., of Washington Court House, Ohio, and two grandchildren.
