John A. Connor, 56, a civilian cost and budget officer with the Air Force for more than 30 years before retiring in 1978, died of cardiac arrest Saturday, at Anne Arundel General Hospital in Annapolis.

He came to Washington in 1950, and served as deputy director for cost and then, for about 12 years, as deputy director of the budget for the Air Force Systems Command based at Andrews Air Force Base.

Mr. Connor began working for the old Army Air Corps in 1942 and worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base before coming to Washington.

He was a native of Logan, Ohio.

Mr. Connor was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater. He also had been a member of the board and treasurer of the South Anne Arundel Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise L., and two sons, Andy and Greg, all of the home in Edgewater; two other sons, John D., of Towson, and Jeff, who is serving with the Navy in Norfolk, Va.; two borthers, Jerry, of Logan, Ohio, and Philip of Effingham, Ill.; a sister, Zita Kessler, of Athens, Ohio, and two grandchildren.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contribution in his memory to the building fund of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater, 21037.
