Lionel Lee Wissman, 19, an airman stationed at Kadena Air Force Base on Okinawa and a 1978 graduate of Gwynn Park Senior High School in Junction, Md., disappeared Saturday while swimming with friends near the air base.
An Air Force spokesman said he was listed as missing and presumed dead.
The spokesman said Mr. Wissman was struck by a wave that threw him against a cliff and then carried him out to sea. An extensive search by the Air Force and the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency failed to recover the body.
Mr. Wissman was born in Richmond, and came to the Washington area with his family in 1968. He attended elementary and junior high school in Oxon Hill. He joined the Air Force after high school and had been stationed in Okinawa since February.
Survivors include his parents, Wesley G. and Betty Wissman, and two sisters, Wanda and Glenda, all of Oxon Hill; his grandmother, Lucille Liskey of Nokesville, Va.; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fernwalt, and his great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hillary Babcock, all of Barberton, Ohio.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Council on Arteriosclerosis of the American Heart Association.
