An off-duty Prince George's County policeman fatally shot an armed holdup man, and a D.C. officer accidentally shot and critically wounded a burglary suspect in separate incidents last night, police officials reported.

The victim in the county shooting, identified as Wayne O. Smith, 35, of 4103 53rd Pl., Bladensburg, was shot once in the chest by Officer Leonard J. Valeo outside the China Dragon Restaurant at 7527 Landover Rd., Kentland.

The man wounded in the District incident, Edward Thomas, 23, was in the intensive care unit of Capitol Hill Hospital early today with a wound in the neck. He was identified as a resident of a D.C. Department of Corrections work-release, halfway house at 1430 D St. NE.

The county shooting occured about 9:30 p.m. after a man armed with a pistol entered the restaurant. As the man wasrobbing several restaurant patrons, the manager ran next door to a 7-Eleven store, where he knew Valeo worked part time.

After Valeo confronted the suspect in the restaurant parking lot and identified himself as a policeman, officials said, the man pointed a handgun at the officer. Valeo then fired, strikingSmith in the chest.

The district shooting occured about an hour earlier behind a town house at 404 11th St. SE, where Officer James R. Gibson Jr. and another policemanwere investigating a Monday night burglary.

Officials said the two officers surprised a man trying to break through a screen porch attached to the town house,and as they were trying to arrest him, Gibson's gun accidentally fired, wounding the suspect.
