Ernest C. Shaffer, 75, a retired employee of the Department of Commerce, died Tuesday at Suburban Hospital.
He had been hospitalized Sept. 11 after he was injured in an accident involving his car and two other vehicles at Georgia Avenue and Seminary Road in Silver Spring.
Mr. Shaffer, who lived in Silver Spring, was a registered professional engineer. During the early 1950s, he worked for the old National Production Authority and then joined the communications division of the Business and Defense Service Administration at Commerce, retiring in 1970.
He was born in Lebanon, Pa., and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Bucknell University. He worked in Harrisburg, Pa., where he was active in the Masons and Shrine, before coming here.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Northwest Shrine Club, Ambassador Corps to Almas Temple and the Montgomery Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon here.
He belonged to the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
His wife, Margaret (Peggy) Patton Shaffer died in 1966.
There are no immediate survivors. It is suggested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children, the Masonic Home here or the Muscular Dystrophy Association through Montgomery Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
