Steven Craig Childs, 16, an 11th grade student at High Point Senior High School in Beltsville, died Monday after the car in which he was riding ran into an embankment at Rte. 1 and Ammendale Road in Beltsville.

A Prince George's County police spokesman said the car was traveling at high speed on wet pavement when the accident occured. The driver, who suffered knee and face injuries, was taken to Greater Laurel-Beltsville Hospital, treated and released.

Steven died after being taken to Prince George's General Hospital with massive head injuries.

He was born in Silver Spring. A member of Boy Scout Troop 1272, he was a life scout, a member of the Leadership Corps and assisted younger scouts in camping, boating and other outdoor activities.

Steven also worked part-time at the Ramada Inn in Calverton.

Survivors include his parents, Walter C. and Nancy Carleton Childs, and a sister, Carole Elaine, all of the home in Beltsville, and his grandparents, Robert H. and Dorothy Carleton of Silver Spring, and Clayton S. and Carla Childs of Green Valley, Ariz.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Boy Scout Troop 1272 in Beltsville, or to District 22C, Lions Eye Bank, 919 18th St. NW, Washington, 20006.
