Kim J. Koval, 25, a sonar technician in the Navy and a lifelong resident of the Washington area, died at Prince George's General Hospital Nov. 28 of injuries he received four days earlier in an automobile accident.
County authorities said Mr. Koval was driving a car that struck a utility pole near the intersection of Calvert Road and 51st Street in College Park. A passenger in the vehicle was treated and released.
Mr. Koval was a native of Washington and a graduate of Paint Branch High School in Silver Spring. He joined the Navy four years ago and had been stationed aboard the nuclear submarine Will Rogers for the past two years. He was home on leave at the time of the accident.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring.
He is survived by his parents, John and Delphine Koval, two sisters, jondelle and Kelly Koval, and a grandmother, Sylvia Maloney, all of Silver Spring; another sister, Holly Spaulding of Columbia; his other grandmother, Katherine Koval of Mount Rainier, and a great-grandmother, Anastasia Czygier of Catonsville.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Naval Relief Association, or to the Intensive Care Unit at Prince George's General Hospital.
