A 25-year-old Prince George's County woman, defending herself against an attacker in her apartment yesterday, slashed at the man with a pair of scissors then shot him several times with a handgun, county police said.
The force of the shots sent the man crashing through a sliding glass door and to the ground three stories below. He died on arrival at Prince George's General Hospital shortly after the 4:30 p.m. incident.
The woman, who lives in a four-story apartment building in Chillum, told police that the man forced his way into her apartment, and after grabbing a knife from the kitchen, dragged her to a bedroom, where he raped her.
After the assault, the woman told police, she grabbed a pair of scissors from the top of a nearby table and began slashing at the man.
The man wrestled the scissors from her hand, however, and the woman ran to the table again, pulled a handgun from the drawer and shot him several times in the legs and torso.
Police last night identified the dead man as James A. Sharpe, of 3413 Toledo Ter., Hyattsville.
The woman was taken to the sexual assault center at Prince George's General, where she was treated and released.
