Plans to expand two inner-city Safeway markets -- at 1701 Corcoran St. NW and 1747 Columbia Rd. NW -- were approved by the D.C. Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) last week. Both cases had aroused some opposition from neighbors, but in both cases compromises were worked out.

Some neighbors of the Corcoran Street store protested that delivery trucks would clog the already congested street. The BZA's approval of that expansion was conditional on Safeway's working out a schedule so that no more than three delivery trucks would be outside the store at one time. The BZA is to hold another hearing on the matter 18 months after the expansion is completed to find out if deliveries are causing traffic problems.

Adams-Morgan community groups objected to the planned addition to the Columbia Road Safeway on grounds that it would aggravate parking problems in their neighborhood. Negotiations between Safeway and the community, however, produced a compromise in which 30 new parking spaces are to be provided with the store addition.
