Federal, state and municipal government offices in the Washington area will be closed on Christmas and New Year's days. But the pattern will vary on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

All Virginia state offices will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. But Maryland state offices, District of Columbia government offices, Prince George's County government offices, and post offices will be open on both days.

The Federal government, Alexandria city government offices and Fairfax and Montgomery county offices will be closed Dec. 24, but open Dec. 31. Arlington County offices will be on a half-day schedule Dec. 24, but will be open all day New Year's Eve.

Most area banks will be open both Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, and Metro will operate on a regular but reduced bus and rail schedule, making normal stops with less commuter equipment, on both days.

Rush-hour traffic restrictions in the District will not be in effect on Dec. 24, including reversible street patterns bus lanes and rush-hour turning, standing and parking prohibitions.

Nonrush hour parking restrictions, however, will remain in effect. Parking meter payment also will be required. The same rules will apply on Dec. 31.

The trash collection schedule will vary in each jurisdiction. In the District, Tuesday's usual collection will be on Wednesday; Montgomery County, Tuesday's collection on next regular day; Alexandria, Tuesday's collection on Wednesday, making normal collection on other days one day later; Fairfax County, Tuesday's collection for both holidays will be made Monday, one day early, and in Prince George's County, no collections on either holiday but trash will be collected otherwise as usual. The pattern will vary in Arlington, as residents have been informed.

Liquor stores in Virginia will be open until 6 p.m. only on both eves and until midnight in the District. Liquor stores in Maryland will be open during normal hours on both eves.

All area schools will close today and will not reopen until Jan. 2.
