A Silver Spring man and a Montgomery County woman were killed in separate traffic accidents New Year's Eve and the early hours of New Year's Day.
Ioannis Perrakis Kontos, 46, of 2388 Glenmont Circle was struck by an eastbound car as he attempted to cross the Capital Beltway near the Riggs Road overpass about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Police said Kontas had parked his car on south shoulder and was going to talk to a Maryland State Police trooper parked on the opposite shoulder of the four-lane highway when he was hit. He died later at Prince George's General Hospital, according to state police.
Seven hours later, Betty I. Boone, 21, of 20201 Buck Lodge Rd., Boyds, was killed when the car in which she was riding went out of control on Clopper Road in northern Montgomery County. The car smashed through 89 feet of wooden fence railing before stopping, according to Montgomery County police. Boone was pronounced dead on arrival at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
The driver of the car, Glen Edward Barnhouse, 23, of the same address was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released. He was charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving after his license had been revoked, according to county police.
