Jean M. Dayton, 51, an associate professor in the nursing department at Prince George's Community College, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Wednesday at Doctor's Hospital of Prince George's County.

Mrs. Dayton had been an associate professor of nursing since joining the college in 1968. She began her career as a nurse at the Chestnut Lodge psychiatric hospital in Rockville and later was a clinical instructor and head nurse at Children's Hospital National Medical Center here. Before joining Prince George's Community College, she was coordinator for nursing services at Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly.

She was born in Maryland and attended the Nashville General Hospital School of Nursing in Tennessee. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Catholic University in 1957 and a master's degree in nursing from Yale University in 1960. She was the recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Fellowship Award from Yale.

Mrs. Dalton lived in Mitchellville, Md. She was a member of District 6 of the Maryland Nurse's Association in Prince George's County and had served as chairman of its legislative committee.

Survivors include her husband, C. Mitchell, and a Son, Mitch, both of Mitchellville; two daughters, Cherie Sette of Washington, and Stephanie Bordas of Mount Rainier; her mother, Jean Abrams of Columbia, Md., and one granddaughter.
