A three-week series of evening workshops for parents on student drug abuse is being offered by the Montgomery County Council of PTAs.

All the workshops will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. The first, "Is My Child on Drugs? How Do I Know?," will focus on identifying drug users and understanding life in school. It will be held Monday, Jan. 21 at Whittier Woods School, 7300 Whittier Blvd., Bethesda, and Magruder High School, 5939 Muncaster Mill Rd., Rockville; Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Northwood High School, 919 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, and Gaithersburg High School, 314 South Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, and Thursday, Jan. 24, at Richard Montgomery High, 250 R. Montgomery Dr., Rockville.

The Second workshop, "What Do I Do Now?" considers what to say and not to say to the student drug user, and will describe both community and school resources that are available. It will be held Monday, Jan. 28 at Whittier Woods School and Magruder High; Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Northwood High and Gaithersburg High, and Thursday, Jan. 31, at Richard Montgomery High.

The final workshop, "Why Aren't the Schools Doing Anything -- Or Are They?," will examine the school system drug policy and discuss how parents can be sure the policy is followed.It will be held Monday, Feb. 4, at Whittier Woods School and Magruder High; Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Northwood High and Gaithersburg High, and Thursday, Feb. 7, at Richard Montgomery High.

To pre-register, call the Montgomery County Council of Parent Teacher Associations at 340-0940 before 2 p.m. weekdays. If schools are closed for bad weather, any drug workshop would be cancelled and automatically rescheduled for the following week at the same time and location.
