On Friday, January 18, 1980, at his residence, Locust Grove, Va., GRANT C. SMITH, survived by his wife Margaret V. Smith; one daughter, Joan R. McMahan, Manassas, Va.; one brother Malcolm F. Smith, Falls Church, Va.; one sister Mrs. Madelyn A. Gratrix of Springfield, Va. Also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday, January 21, from JOHNSON'S FUNERAL HOME, Locust Grove, Va. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, Sunday night, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Donations may be made to Living Memorial Fund of New Hope Baptist Church, Mine Run, Va., or The Lake of the Woods Fire and Rescue Squads. Mr. Smith was born in Washington, D.C. and spent most of his vacation time, during his early years on the farms of his late uncle I. M. Chewning and his late aunt Mrs. Annie Mason. He worked for the federal government until the end of World War II, at which time he left the government and joined a well-known heavy construction firm in Washington. During the early months of the War in Vietnam, he returned again to work for the federal government from which he retired in 1971. He served in a civilian capacity in the South Atlantic during the early years of World War II. He received many letters of acknowledgement, appreciation and commendation for outstanding service while in the employ of the federal government.
