Mary Jane Burwell, 48, a former teacher of English and drama at Hood College and prominent director of Religious drama in the Washington area, died of cardiac arrest Wednesday at the Fairfax Hospital. Mrs. Burwell was born and reared in Uniontown, Pa. She was a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology school of drama, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in directing, and attended the University of Illinois, receiving a Master of Arts degree in oral interpretation. In 1956 she married Dr. James Burwell, who is Chairman of the Radiology Department at the Fairfax Hospital. Mrs. Burwell was a ruling elder of the Falls Church Presbyterian Church, and an active member of the Fairfax County Medical Auxiliary and Women's Golf Association of the Washington Golf and Country Club. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Biance (at the University of Virginia) and Rebecca (at home); a sister, Mrs. Joanne Rush of Waynesburg, Pa., and two brothers, Dr. Ernest DeHaas of Carmichaels, Pa., and Dr. Robert DeHaas of Washington, Pa. Funeral arrangements are with PEARSON'S FUNERAL HOME in Falls Church. The family will receive visitors on Friday 2 to 4 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service at the Falls Church Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Broad st., at 10 a.m. Saturday.
