Donn Lindsey Wise, 51, founder and president of International Underwriters Inc. and International Union Insurance Services Inc. in Vienna, died Tuesday at George Washington University Hospital after a heart attack.
Mr. Wise began as a trainee in 1953 with Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia. He came to this area in 1958 as an associate of the L. E. Harris Insurance agency in Washington. Two years later, he established International Underwriters Inc., and in 1965, founded International Union Insurance Services. Both companies specialize in accident and special risk insurance, particularly for unions in the AFL-CIO, and the latter company also administers union health and welfare plans.
Mr. Wise was born in Washington and grew up here and in Milwaukee. He earned a bachelor's degree, and a master's degree in chemistry, from Columbia University.
He served in the Army in Korea during the conflict there and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
He lived in Falls Church and was a longtime member of the Cedar Run Hunting Preserve in Fairfax and Ducks Unlimited.
Mr. Wise's marriage to Katherine Winslow ended in Divorce.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, of Falls Church; three daughters by his first marriage. Prudence Ann and Priscilla Amy, both of Falls Church, and Mary Katherine, of Washington; his mother, Pearl Wise, and sister, Jean Yadro, both of Milwaukee; another sister, Joan Guinand of Houston, and two brothers, David, of Beloit, Wis., and Michael, of Springdale, Ark.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Donn L. Wise Memorial Coronary Case Unit at George Washington University Hospital.
