A 4-year-old child was killed last night while standing with her mother on a sidewalk on a busy Prince George's County street when a speeding automobile skidded out of control, jumped the curb and struck them.
The vehicle hit a concrete median, careened out of control for 160 feet and flipped over three times before striking the victims and slamming into a building in the 5900 block of George Palmer Highway, according to Prince George's County police.
A county police helicopter landed near the scene of the 5:30 p.m. incident as part of a desperate effort to save the life of the 4-year-old victim, Ponza Orea Hayes.
While her mother, Jacklin Marie Hayes, 22, of 2406 Virginia Ave., Kentland, was taken by ambulance to Prince George's General Hospital, the girl was flown there in an effort to save minutes and seconds.
The girl died at the hospital at 7:40 p.m.
The mother was listed early this morning in serious condition at the hospital. A third victim, Russell Louis Malry, 20, of 524 68th Pl., Seat Pleasant, who had also been on the sidewalk when the car jumped the curb, was released from the hospital after treatment for back and leg injuries. c
Police said they arrested Russel Houston Payne II, 20, of 1132 46th Pl. SE, the elleged driver of the auto. He was reported uninjured.
Authorities said Payne was charged with speeding, failure to drive in a single lane and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was being held early this morning in the Prince George's County detention center in Upper Marlboro in lieu of $1,500 bond.
There was no immediate estimate of damage to the building struck, identified as Church's Fried Chicken, at 5909 George Palmer Hwy., in Seat Pleasant not far from the District line.
